Lasers

Here at Dr. Moin’s, we are interested in more than just “straight teeth.” Achieving a gorgeous smile means getting ideal function and bite, a well-proportioned face and profile, and ideal gingival esthetics. The soft-tissue laser is an effective tool to enhance the esthetic outcomes and can significantly reduce treatment time. The procedures are very simple and are done with topical anesthetic, with no injections. As the laser beam cuts the tissue, it coagulates the blood and eliminates bleeding. There are mainly three applications for using a laser in orthodontics:

  1. There are times that a tooth (most often the upper eye teeth) is under the soft tissue and is slow in its eruption. A laser can be used to expose the tooth, allowing us to place a bracket and guide the tooth into position, thus shortening treatment time.
  2. Gingival esthetics can be enhanced through shaping and removing excess gingival tissue, allowing more of the tooth structure to show. This can be done during treatment, at appliance removal, and even in retention.
  3. Overgrown gum tissue around a loose orthodontic bracket can be removed to allow proper bracket placement.

Cone Beam CT

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) can be very helpful in orthodontic treatment-planning by providing a 3-D x-ray of the jaws and teeth. The images are extremely detailed and can give Dr. Moin a closer look at issues such as impacted teeth, joint abnormalities, and bone density for future implants. The procedure has a very low level of radiation and gives a clear, undistorted image. We work closely with Advanced Dental Imaging, located here in our building – which provides our patients added convenience. Once the scans are done, Dr.Moin receives the images along with a detailed report from the Advanced Dental Board stating their findings.

TADs – Temporary Anchorage Devices

TADTADs are mini-screws that are placed to provide Dr. Moin a fixed “anchor” to aid in space closure, molar up-righting, correction of anterior open-bites and many other tooth movements. In this way, Dr. Moin is able to get results that may not have been accomplished with braces alone. The advantages to the patient include greater comfort (can eliminate the need for headgear and other uncomfortable auxiliaries), shorter treatment time, and drastically reduces the patient compliance required. Placing the TADs is typically done in the office with local anesthetic and only takes a few minutes. They are easily removed once they’ve served their purpose.
