Phase 1 (Early Intervention Orthodontic Treatment)

ages stagesWhen most people think of orthodontics, they think of teenagers.  In fact most orthodontic treatment begins between the ages of 9 and 14.  The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that every child have a check-up with an orthodontic specialist no later than age 7.  Your dentist or hygienists may also recommend your child see Dr. Moin at this early age for a developing malocclusion (bad bite), such as an under bite.

There is a certain window of opportunity to correct some of these malocclusions. At this age the jaws are still growing. There are orthodontic appliances that utilize this growth period to help with jaw size discrepancies. In most cases early treatment can reduce the need for extractions of permanent teeth and can make Phase 2 treatment, full braces, much easier.

Adolescent Treatment

Between the ages of 11 and 15 is the most common time for orthodontic treatment, and for good reasons. By age 12, most- if not all- of the permanent teeth have erupted and are in place, and crowding, gaps and bad bites can easily be detected. These problems will hardly ever correct themselves, so this is when most parents decide to seek orthodontic treatment.

This is also a good time for orthodontic treatment because many of the negative associations with braces are not present. Many adolescents in this age range undergo orthodontic treatment, and they are very often able to be convinced to wear braces because they see their friends wearing them and want to fit in.

In addition, adolescents are growing rapidly and orthodontists can take advantage of these growth spurts to help shape the bite and teeth correctly. At this age they high metabolisms which can help shorten overall treatment time and reduce the discomfort of orthodontic treatment.
